General Information
What is the Phoenix Herpetological Sanctuary (PHS)?
PHS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation and preservation of native and non-native reptiles through education, rehabilitation, rescue, and relocation.
Where is the sanctuary located?
PHS is located in North Scottsdale, Arizona, near Dynamite Boulevard and Scottsdale Road. The exact address is provided after your tour or appointment is confirmed via email.
Is the sanctuary open to the public without an appointment?
No. PHS is a private sanctuary, not a public zoo. We operate by appointment only due to limited staffing and our focus on education. All visitors must book a public or private tour through our website.
Is the sanctuary accessible to individuals with disabilities?
Yes. The sanctuary is designed to be accessible, with terrain that is mostly flat and free of obstacles. We aim to provide an inclusive experience for all guests. Please see our Accessibility page for more information and pictures.
Tour & Visit Information
How do I schedule a tour?
Tours can be booked through the Tour/Event Calendar on the PHS website.
What types of tours are available?
PHS offers Public sanctuary tours, Private tours, Private mammal tours, Birthday tours and specialty experiences such as “Curator for a Day.” Keep a look out for our Special Events section, where we often will have different experiences for the public as well.
What should I bring on a tour?
We recommend bringing closed-toe shoes (like sneakers or boots), water, and sunscreen.
Can we bring food to the sanctuary?
No. For the safety of our animals, outside food is not allowed. Many animals are on species-specific diets, and certain foods can be harmful if accidentally introduced into enclosures. Water is always welcome. **Please reach out if you have special circumstances.
What animals will we see on a tour?
Tours include a variety of animals such as crocodilians, tortoises, turtles, giant lizards, giant snakes, and several of our mammals. You’ll even have the chance to see venomous species like Cobras, Rattlesnakes, and Gila monsters - safely, of course! Some interactive reptile experiences with small snakes, lizards, or tortoises are also included.
What if I need to reschedule my tour?
We would appreciate 24-hour notice if you need to reschedule your tour appointment. We will be happy to move your appointment to a better time or day that we have available. Although tours are non-refundable, we are always happy to reschedule!
Please call us at 480-513-4377 to reschedule.
Animal Rescue & Surrender
Can I surrender my pet reptile to PHS?
Yes. PHS does accept surrendered reptiles for a fee, but we encourage you to first seek out a new home through trusted individuals or online reptile communities. If surrendering is your only option, we are here to help. Note: We also have some restrictions and criteria for many of the animals we are able to take in. Check our Surrender Page under “Need Help” for more information.
Why is there a surrender fee?
Every animal requires ongoing care, including proper housing, diet, and veterinary services. The small surrender fee helps offset these costs. We appreciate your understanding and support of the work we do.
Found a lost reptile?
If you have found a lost reptile, you can schedule a time to bring it to us. Please call us at 480-513-4377 to schedule a time. *We are unable to take injured or sick animals as we do not have a vet on staff. We are a sanctuary for healthy pets. We are also unable to take in native species.
Why won’t PHS accept Sonoran Desert Tortoises from the public?
Sonoran Desert Tortoises are protected under Arizona law and fall under the jurisdiction of Arizona Game and Fish. PHS is not permitted to accept or adopt out native species.
What should I do if I find a rattlesnake on my property?
Contact PHS directly for rattlesnake rescue and removal services. We offer safe and humane removal of native venomous or non-venomous species for a $100 fee. Call 480-513-4377.
Adoption Information
Can I adopt a reptile from PHS?
Yes. PHS offers reptile adoptions during our monthly Adoption Days, where you can meet available animals and purchase necessary supplies. Please check out our Adoption Days and Tank Sales page under “Visit.”
What should I consider before adopting a reptile?
Reptiles have unique care needs including specific diets, lighting, heating, UVB, habitats, and long lifespans. PHS provides care guides and information to help you make an informed decision.
What kind of animals are available?
This can change as it depends on what has been brought to us. We always have Sulcata Tortoises and Red-Eared Sliders. We also usually have Russian Tortoises, Box Turtles, Ball Pythons Corn snakes, and sometimes other species of snakes, Bearded Dragons, Leopard Geckos, and Crested Geckos. You’ll just have to come and see!
